Simple Resolutions for Good Dental Health
As the current year draws to a close, dentists in SouthWest Portland, OR Dr. Todd Beck and Dr. Jacob Morrow and patients at South Waterfront Dental focus on the upcoming new year.
In keeping with tradition, the approach of a new year brings with it the spirit of making resolutions – why not make a few simple New Year’s Resolutions for good dental health?
First Resolution: Replace the Toothbrush
There’s a good chance that your toothbrush is tired, worn out from use over the last couple of months. While it’s good news that you’ve been brushing your teeth regularly, it’s important to remember to replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
There is, of course, an exception to this rule. If you use an electric toothbrush, you may be able to use the brush heads for longer periods of time than traditional toothbrushes. Consult your particular brand of electric toothbrush to be sure.
Second Resolution: Flossing Fun
At South Waterfront Dental, we encounter many patients who are hesitant to make flossing a part of their daily dental hygiene routine. However, it is essential to floss daily – if you’re not flossing, then you’re only doing half the job of thoroughly cleaning your teeth.
Flossing is really simple, and it gets faster with practice. Try different kinds of floss to find your favorite type and flavor, then put floss in places you find yourself frequently; for example, put floss in easy-to-reach places in your car, purse, or by the phone. This will be a reminder for you to practice flossing on daily basis and take advantage of some of the down time that occurs in every day life.
Third Resolution: A Healthier Diet
It’s easy to pack on the pounds around the holidays, and the New Year provides a wonderful opportunity to make dietary changes for good overall and dental health. Start slowly by drinking a lot of water throughout the day and skipping soda and other sugary drinks. Take out foods high in sugar and fat, and replace them with vegetables, fruit, and sources of lean protein.
These kinds of foods will help you to feel satisfied and will also naturally help keep your teeth cleaner and healthier. Be aware that there may be a period of time that you experience sugar cravings – persevere through them and they will soon go away as you make healthier food choices.
Fourth Resolution: Sleep Soundly
Many of our patients incorporate exercise for better health, which of course has benefits. However, it’s important to remember that sleep is as important as dietary changes and a strong daily routine for good dental health. A good amount of sleep each night can help you cut calories and fight sugar cravings, as well as contribute to overall well-being, especially as the New Year begins.
Don’t forget to plan your next visit to South Waterfront Dental to ensure the best dental health and bright smile to start the New Year!
