Use 2 x 2 to Help Children Brush Their Teeth

Kids spend a lot of time every day doing a lot of different things, but brushing their teeth would probably not be counted as a favorite activity. Portland Oregon family dentists Dr. Todd Beck and Dr. Jacob Morrow have found a fun way to help change their minds!

This strategy involves what would first be perceived as a simple math problem, which is “2 x 2.” And while it’s true that this appears to be simple multiplication, it’s actually a campaign to encourage children to brush their teeth regularly.

What’s the 2 x 2 Campaign?

The Ad Council and The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives has worked really hard to change the perception of teeth brushing for both parents and kids through a campaign called “2 x 2.” This movement provides education for parents and entertainment for kids, urging the need for children and adults of all changes to brush their teeth twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time.

Why 2 x 2?

For kids and adults of any age in our fast-paced, technological world, two minutes can seem like a really long time. When commercials are thirty seconds long and dinner can be microwaved within a few minutes, why spend two minutes mindlessly brushing teeth?

The simple answer is that two minutes is how long is takes to remove that yellow substance, called plaque, that sticks to the surfaces of teeth. The two minute minimum for brushing allows time for kids to reach all areas of their mouths, including those hard to reach places, as well as time to brush well along the gumline. If it isn’t removed from regular brushing and flossing, the abundance of plaque can lead to cavities and even bigger dental problems down the road.

How Does 2 x 2 Work?

It might seem like a good idea to simply set a timer for two minutes, but this campaign involves a combination of technology and entertainment to keep kids brushing regularly. To keep children engaged, consider this wide variety of 2 minute videos that kids can watch while they brush. Children and parents can choose from Tom & Jerry, Elmo, Adventure Time, and the Dream Jam Band, among others.

Here are a few additional ways to help keep your kids’ teeth healthy:

  • Change your child’s toothbrush every three months or so, and choose toothbrushes with soft bristles that can reach all areas of your child’s mouth.
  • Use only a small amount of toothpaste for your child – about the size of a pea will work.
  • Limit snacks and drinks that are high in sugar, and focus on a diet of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.
  • Make regular appointments for your children with the dentist to keep teeth healthy and avoid any potential problems.
